It’s goodbye to La Liga this season for Diego Costa after the Atletico Madrid forward was handed an eight-game ban for insulting the referee’s mum.
Costa was shown a straight red by referee Gi Manzano during Atletico’s defeat to Barcelona last Saturday. The referee explained in his post-match report that he issued the card because the Spain international insulted his mother.
The striker will sit out the remaining seven games for this season, and Atletico’s kickoff next season if he remains in the league. The fiery forward received a four-game ban for his insults and another four-game for grabbing the ref’s arm.
While we believe that Costa deserves his punishment, some fans have made reference to when Leo Messi told referee Hernandez Hernandez during an El Classico game, “You s***, you s***, and you s***, it’s good to give them things,” and there was no red card, no sending off and no match bans.
For them, the punishment for the former Chelsea striker is drastic as the foul that led to Costa’s actions did not merit a card.
